What Is a Red Light Therapy Mask and How Does It Work?

· 5 min read · Théo Marchi

In short: Discover what a red light therapy mask is, how LED light interacts with your skin cells and what to expect from a wireless LED face mask at home.

What Is a Red Light Therapy Mask and How Does It Work?

A red light therapy mask is a face-shaped device fitted with LED lamp beads that emit low-level red light. You wear it for a few minutes a day, usually as part of your skincare routine. The idea behind it, called photobiomodulation, is simple: certain wavelengths of light can be absorbed by your skin cells and influence how they behave.

How does red light therapy work?

Most red light devices use visible red wavelengths, generally around 630 to 660 nanometres. These wavelengths can travel past the surface of the skin. Inside your cells, the mitochondria contain a light-sensitive enzyme that absorbs this light. Research suggests that this can help cells produce more ATP, the molecule they use as energy, which supports their natural renewal processes.

What does an LED face mask actually do?

Unlike creams, a mask does not add a product to your skin. It delivers light evenly across the face, which is why the number and spread of LEDs matters. A mask with 180 LED lamp beads, such as Lumino, is designed to cover the forehead, cheeks, nose, mouth and chin in a single session.

What can you expect?

People usually use an LED mask to support the look of:

  • fine lines and wrinkles
  • dullness and uneven skin tone
  • acne marks and dark spots
  • overall radiance and skin comfort

Light therapy is gradual. Most users notice differences after several weeks of regular use, and results vary from person to person. An LED mask is a cosmetic wellness device, not a medical treatment.

Wireless versus corded masks

A wireless red light mask is easier to live with: you can sit, read or listen to music without being plugged in. A rechargeable battery of around 400 mAh is typically enough for several sessions per charge.

How to start

Cleanse your face, put the mask on, close your eyes and relax for 10 to 30 minutes. Our guide on how often to use an LED face mask explains the ideal rhythm, and our article on LED mask safety lists who should check with a doctor first.
